Placement Ready: Your Safety Toolkit Module
What is it?
What do I need?
How long will it take?
Clinical placement is an important and rewarding part of your professional training. While most placement experiences are positive, you may encounter unexpected or challenging situations that require you to assess risk, respond appropriately and seek support when needed. Feedback from students has shown that many would value more support and training to help them navigate these situations with confidence. This need for additional preparation was also highlighted in the University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association's 2024 Safety on Placement report, which found that students wanted more training to help prepare them for the realities of placement.
In response, the Placement Ready: Your Safety Toolkit module has been developed to help you recognise and respond to a range of safety issues that may arise during placement. Through practical guidance and real-world scenarios, the module aims to strengthen your understanding of risk, build your confidence in navigating complex situations, and increase your awareness of available support and reporting pathways.
In 2026, the module was piloted with 493 students. Students reported increased confidence in recognising and managing clinical safety issues, greater awareness of University reporting requirements, and feeling better prepared to respond to safety concerns before commencing placement.
How will the module help to prepare me for placement?
The Placement Ready: Your Safety Toolkit module:
- helps you to recognise common risks that may arise during placement and respond appropriately;
- explains how and where to access support if you have concerns about your own safety or wellbeing, or that of a colleague or patient;
- provides practical guidance and links to University support services; and
- should help you feel safer and more prepared before you begin placements.
Some video scenarios are based on real-life events and discuss challenging situations that may arise during placement. If the content raises concerns for you or causes distress, support is available through University Support Services or your course academic support.
