Other checks by course
Students in particular courses will need to satisfy additional pre-placement requirements. These are outlined below for each course.
In addition, some individual placements will require extra pre-placement tasks. These tasks will be either communicated to you directly or listed in your Sonia portal on the Checks tab.
Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology

All students in the Master of Clinical Audiology are required to successfully complete the Hand Hygiene for Clinical Healthcare Workers online learning module (yearly). Go to the NHHI Learning Management System register your details (free) and select "Hand hygiene for clinical healthcare workers". The completed certificate must be uploaded to the Sonia Portal prior to placements with sufficient time allowed for Check clearance. This needs to be done annually while enrolled.
All students must also complete the Audiology Student Declaration form in Sonia prior to the commencement of clinical placement.

All students in the Master Speech Pathology are required to:
- Obtain a NDIS Worker Screening Check; submit evidence of clearance (using a screenshot of the complete email) to Sonia.
- Complete the Hand Hygiene for Clinical Healthcare Workers online learning module (yearly). Go to the NHHI Learning Management System register your details (free) and select "Hand hygiene for clinical healthcare workers". The completed certificate must be uploaded to the Sonia Portal prior to placements with sufficient time allowed for Check clearance. This needs to be done annually while enrolled.
Students are required to satisfy each of these requirements prior to the commencement of pre-clinical experiences no later than the end of Week 3, Semester 1. Students will need to upload documentation to Sonia under the Checks tab.
Note: NDIS Checks need to be applied for by the end of Week 3. Due to the sometimes lengthy application time, students have until the end of Week 10 to upload clearance of their NDIS Check.
Students must be able to produce all pre-placement documentation for sighting by the placement provider on request.

Department of Nursing

All students in the Master of Nursing Science are required to:
- Successfully complete a Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLTAID009) course annually (National CPR Foundation courses are not recognised).
- Complete the O'Shea NoLift Safe Patient Handling - Acute Care module annually. To access this module, register your details and select Acute Care (Hospitals): Positioning and Transferring People Safely.
- Complete the Hand Hygiene for Clinical Healthcare Workers online course and review 5 Moments of Hand Hygiene annually. To access the module, go to NHHI Learning Management System, register your details (free) and choose Hand hygiene for clinical healthcare workers online learning module. (This module provides information on hand hygiene for clinical healthcare workers, including student healthcare workers)
- Complete the Fitness for Practice Declaration (Student Undertaking form in Sonia)
- Regular COVID-19 vaccination is a compulsory requirement for all students undertaking placements. This is due to ongoing mandates from major placement providers, many of whom require evidence of an annual COVID-19 booster for staff and students. Students are required to satisfy each of these requirements prior to the commencement of professional experience placement, no later than the end of Week 3, Semester 1. Students will need to upload documentation to Sonia under the Checks tab.
Students must also be able to produce all documentation for sighting by the placement provider on request.
Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences

All students in the Doctor of Optometry are required to successfully complete a Provide CPR (HLTAID009) course before the commencement of third year and repeat the course before the commencement of fourth year. Students will need to upload documentation to Sonia under the Checks tab prior to the commencement of each year.
Department of Physiotherapy

All students enrolled into the Doctor of Physiotherapy are required to successfully complete the Hand Hygiene for Clinical Healthcare Workers online learning module (this must be done annually). Go to the NHHI Learning Management System register your details (free) and select "Hand hygiene for clinical healthcare workers".
The completed certificate must be uploaded to the Sonia Portal prior to placements with sufficient time allowed for Check clearance.
This needs to be done annually while enrolled. The certificate must also be printed and taken on your first day of clinical placement. If you do not present your certificate on the first day, your placement provider may not allow you to undertake your placement.

All students in the Bachelor of Oral Health must obtain and submit an appropriate First Aid Certificate within the first 4 weeks of Semester 1 in their first year. Acceptable Australian First Aid courses must be HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or equivalent. You must ensure you have a current first aid certification for the entirety of your course.
To check that your Australian First Aid training is nationally recognised, search for the training organisation name or RTO number at training.gov.au and check for the course code (eg HLTAID011) under the Scope tab, Units of Competency.

Melbourne Medical School

All commencing students are required to successfully complete an approved First Aid training course. First Aid training can be completed by any approved provider in Australia or overseas.
Students are only required to upload evidence of First Aid completion prior to the commencement of their first year of the medical course. Some placement providers may require evidence of First Aid training in later years of the course however if so, this will be requested directly by clinical school staff.
The completed certificate must be uploaded to the Sonia Portal by the clinical compliance deadline specified in their course offer letter.
Australian First Aid Training
Students must have completed, within the last three years, a HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course (or equivalent) by a registered training organisation. Organisations can be checked to see if they provide National Recognised Training at training.gov.au.
- Search for the Organisation name or RTO number (de-select "Include RTOs not currently registered")
- Check for the course code (eg HLTAID011) under the Scope tab, Units of Competency.
Overseas First Aid Training
The following overseas training courses have been assessed and deemed equivalent to HLTAID011 Provide First Aid in Australia. Students who wish to submit completion certificates from a different course should do so early to allow time for the course to be assessed by the Melbourne Medical School.
Canada Students should complete both Standard First Aid and Level C CPR/AED. Approved providers are St John Ambulance, Red Cross or Lifesaving Society. Hong Kong Student should complete the St John First Aid Certificate Course (30 hours covering first aid and CPR in adults and infants). New Zealand Student should complete either Comprehensive First Aid (Red Cross) or First Aid Level 2 (St John). Singapore Students should complete both Standard First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support Course (both provided by Singapore Red Cross). COVID-19 vaccinations
