Need a mentor?
Student Mentoring and Engagement
Have you ever been a mentee or a mentor? Maybe you're not sure what mentoring is or how it could benefit you in your career?
Welcome to the Student Mentoring and Engagement team! Here you'll find out who we are and what we do.
The Student Mentoring and Engagement team team consists of 4 Student Interns, 2 Student Experience Officers, 1 Project Officer and a Team Leader. Together, we oversee multiple mentoring programs as well as other student engagement activities.
Mentoring is a valuable tool that strengthens students' connections with each other, their course and the university. By joining a mentoring program either as a mentor or a mentee, students' develop stronger relationships that support their transition from pre-study (secondary school, professional worker or other) to being a university student; it imparts tips and tricks unique to each course; and helps students face study-related challenges with confidence that they are not alone, that other students or academics have been in their shoes and navigated their way through.
The Student Mentoring and Engagement team manages the following MDHS mentoring programs:
- Peer Mentoring (connecting 1st year MDHS undergraduate students with later year students)
- Academic Mentoring (connecting MDHS undergraduate students with an academic)
- Chancellor's Scholars' Mentoring Program (connecting Chancellor's Scholars with former Chancellor's Scholars who are studying the Doctor of Medicine)
- Honours Alumni Mentoring Program (connecting honours' students with graduate students)
- Psychology Mentoring Program (connecting Psychology honours students with graduate Psychology students)
- Nursing Mentoring Program (connecting 1st year nursing students with later year students)
- MDHS Career Mentoring Program (connecting final year grad students with alumni working in the same field)
In addition to mentoring, the Student Mentoring and Engagement team also manages a bi-monthly newsletter 'The Script' (sent to all Undergraduate and Graduate coursework students), the Chat Fest program (supports international students climatise to Australian culture and language), Faculty Sports Day (Faculties' compete with each other), as well as maintain a food stand at the MDHS Student Hub containing fruit and light snacks to help MDHS students focus on their studies and not their stomachs!
