Establishing a Victorian linked-dataset: what have we learned?

This seminar asks: what does it take to establish a linked-dataset and what have we learned from colorectal cancer care in Victoria so far?

As part of the PRIMCAT program, we have developed a Victorian-wide linked dataset, focused on cancer care. In this seminar, we will provide an in-depth look into the process of developing this linked dataset, including the data sources used, the methods employed to link them, and the challenges and opportunities encountered along the way. We will also present some preliminary findings from our analysis of colorectal cancer care in Victoria using this linked dataset. This research represents new ground in cancer care analytics, providing valuable insights into patient outcomes, treatment patterns, and potential inequities in care delivery. This seminar aims to highlight the intersection of cancer care and big data analytics, and will showcase the potential of linked datasets to drive advances in cancer research and care.

Dr Fanny Franchini is a senior research fellow at the Cancer Health Services Research Unit, where she applies her expertise at the interface of statistics and cancer health science. She completed her PhD in the UK and has since been passionate about using data-driven approaches to advance cancer research.

Fanny's work involves leveraging linked data sources collected across the healthcare continuum to gain insights into how cancer care is delivered in Victoria, and to identify inequities. She leads the MRFF funded "PRedicting the population health economic IMpact of new CAncer Treatments” (PRIMCAT) program, which aims to estimate population health economic impact of new cancer treatments ahead of market approval.
