ISMEG provides up to $2,000 for domestic and $5,000 for international travel to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander MDHS students. Funding covers placements, conferences, electives, and community projects that build academic and leadership skills.

The Indigenous Student Mobility and Engagement Grant (ISMEG) offer financial support of up to $2,000 for domestic travel and up to $5,000 for international travel to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate coursework programs within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) at the University of Melbourne.
The grant supports a wide range of activities that enhance academic, support career trajectory, and leadership development, including travel for placements or conferences, elective opportunities, and community engagement projects. All funded activities must be completed by Sunday, 4 October 2026
Please note that this is for Round 1 applications for 2026. Round 2 opens in September 2026.
If you are planning activities later in the year, you must plan your dates accordingly and select the round that aligns most closely with your proposed activity date range. Applications submitted to the incorrect round may not be considered.
Benefits
Grant funding may be used to assist with costs related to:
- Travel and accommodation to attend or present at conferences
- Placements that are relevant to your MDHS program of study
- Electives that enhance your course but are not otherwise funded
- Community engagement and outreach activities
Grants typically range between AUD $2000 and $5000, depending on the scope of the proposed activity. Partial funding may be awarded.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
- Be currently enrolled in a coursework program within MDHS at the University of Melbourne
- Submit the application before Wednesday, 1 April 2026
- Activity to be completed and report submitted before Sunday, 4 October 2026
- Demonstrate how the activity directly contributes to their academic or career development.
Note: Activities already completed at the time of application are not eligible for funding.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed on:
- Relevance of the proposed activity to the applicant’s field of study or future career goals
- Clear articulation of expected outcomes and benefits
- Feasibility and justification of the proposed budget
- Quality of supporting documentation, such as:
- Any relevant acceptance letters to support the activity
- Letter of endorsement from a supervisor or academic staff member
Conditions
Applicants must submit the following as part of their application:
- Completed online application form
- A Statement of Purpose (maximum 500 words), including:
- Description of the activity
- How it aligns with academic and career goals
- Anticipated outcomes
- An itemised budget detailing expected cost
- Supporting documentation, where applicable

- Applications are reviewed within 3–4 weeks
Post-Activity Reporting:
Successful applicants will be required to:
- Submit a post-activity report (maximum 500 words) within four weeks of completing the activity
- Provide receipts or other evidence of expenditure
- Consent to the use of photographs or testimonials for promotional purposes
