The Bachelor of Biomedicine appealed to me because of its strong focus on human health and disease, and its great graduate outcomes, especially in related fields. As someone who is aiming to become a healthcare professional, I was looking for exactly this!
Furthermore, the University of Melbourne is one of the top universities in the world, with various connections to world-class hospitals and research institutes. I believed this would be the perfect place for me to start my academic and professional journey.

I have enjoyed how different university is compared to high school.
The Bachelor of Biomedicine has a great balance between theoretical and practical learning. Each subject is designed to get students to think critically and apply what they have learned. For instance, problem solving questions and practicals are a key part of our classes. Our lecturers also often include real-life examples to show how ‘science is everywhere’. It is obvious that they are very interested in what they teach, so it is inspiring and motivating to be in class. In addition to quality teaching, it’s amazing to have access to so many excellent facilities.
Biomedicine develops students’ knowledge of and skills in the field of health and biomedical science and enhances their transferrable skills to increase their career prospects after graduation. My study habits have transformed because of the degree’s fast-paced rhythm. I have found that I need to study and prepare notes beforehand to ensure I make the most of my time in class. There is a lot of information to learn and retain, so I am happy that I am building stronger time management and study techniques.
Finally, meeting new people has been another highlight of my studies so far. As a first year international student, forming positive relationships with my peers and faculty staff has been very important to forming a sense of belonging. My communications skills have also improved!

The Bachelor of Biomedicine is preparing me with the necessary knowledge and skills to consider working in health or biomedical research. Currently, I am considering a future as a doctor or researcher, but Biomedicine can lead to promising career prospects in a wide range of areas!
During the course, we are invited to join various workshops and talks by healthcare professionals and biomedical scientists from all over the world. These have been great opportunities to gain direct insight into multiple career options.

If you are considering the University of Melbourne, seek opportunities to meet current students and lecturers from different backgrounds. This approach will help you build a better understanding of the scholarly community you are thinking of joining.
Be mindful that the workload at university can sometimes be intense, but know that there is always support available, so don’t be afraid to reach out when you feel lost.
If you want to pursue studies in health or biomedical science but didn’t study much science in high school, you’ll be pleased to learn that the first year of undergraduate studies offers subjects to provide foundational learning before the later years. So, for Biomedicine, not studying biology at high school won’t be an issue. When there’s a will, there’s a way!
