“I chose to study the Master of Public Health as I wanted to move beyond individual healthcare and explore broader health issues. I am also eager to address healthcare workforce issues (e.g. nursing burnout, workforce shortage) based on my previous working experience.”

Meet Karen
Karen started her Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2024 at the University of Melbourne. She was born and raised in Taiwan, and prior to commencing the MPH, she also worked there as a senior nurse.

I chose to study the Master of Public Health as I wanted to move beyond individual healthcare and explore broader health issues. I am eager to get involved in health promotion and health equity. I am also eager to make the most of my previous work experience to inform ways to improve the healthcare workforce.
I chose to do the MPH at the University of Melbourne due to its in-depth focus on health issues in the Asia-Pacific region and its research on cross-cultural healthcare systems which closely align with Taiwan’s challenges.
Although I could have decided to pursue further study in Taiwan, I did not because I noticed that the advanced nursing courses mostly focused on clinical care and smaller populations.

I love that all the subjects in the Master of Public Health are available for study no matter what specialisation I choose. This allows me to have full flexibility to explore and appreciate the field of public health.
In the MPH, I have developed the skills to discuss health issues with people from diverse backgrounds, elevate health programs strategically, and switch my thinking from treatment to prevention. I have been able to fulfil my goal of moving beyond an individual health focus to public health perspective.
Additionally:
- I am happy that I have been able to improve my time management.
- I like that the campus offers numerous study spaces.
-
In the second year of the Master of Public Health, we are required to finish a capstone subject. There are three capstone options: a research project, professional practice or a ‘Public Health in Practice’ subject. They empower us by offering the opportunity to gain real-world, hands-on experience so that we can be career-ready upon graduation.
Additionally, I plan to connect with alumni through the ‘Ask Alumni’ program to continue to explore different career pathways.

I would suggest future students ensure they develop a clear goal during their Master of Public Health journey. We have many opportunities to explore diverse subjects and specialisations in the course; however, two years is short. Before entering the MPH, it will be useful to reflect on your personal situation (e.g. background, interests, experiences, ideal career), so that you can have at least an initial direction to expand upon when your start your studies.
It’s also crucial to take care of your mental health and seek help when you are overwhelmed.
