Epic EHR: Getting things done as a computer scientist and clinician executive

Epic, one of the most widely used electronic health record (EHR) systems, is often misunderstood and misclassified in terms of its technology structure.

Dr. Mujeeb A. Basit, Chief Medical Informatics Officer of Advanced Data Analytics and Associate Director of the Clinical Informatics Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, will help you reframe your perspective on EHRs and explore the opportunities they offer for research and innovation.

Dr Basit will cover:

• How to engage effectively across the clinical enterprise and contribute as a collaborative partner.
• Examples of analytics and solutions that can be built within EHR systems.
• Practical demonstrations, including a simple research-focused clinical decision support tool, a machine learning–based alerting system, and a complex real-time guideline implementation in the emergency department.

MEET OUR SPEAKER

Dr Mujeeb A Basit is a cardiologist, computer scientist and informatics executive researcher who uses mixed-method approaches to improve medical processes, implement guidelines, and bring machine learning to the bedside.  His research focuses on machine learning based decision support systems, automated error detection in clinical support system and process improvement through user interaction mining with predictive analytics.  He joined the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2016 after completing his Clinical Informatics Fellowship at Harvard Medical School.  He works with guideline agencies and EHR vendors to improve implementation of guidelines in EHRs.

At UTSW, he leads numerous committees focusing on advanced learning systems, consistent process definitions and sequencing analytics. Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Basit worked for the human genome project and the Dallas Heart Study.  He is passionate about education with multiple courses taught and presentations given at the local, national and international levels.  He is on a life-long journey to explain to his family what he does at work.

MEET OUR FACILITATOR

Dr Vlada Rozova is a data scientist and a machine learning practitioner passionate about developing automated systems to improve patient care. She trained in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science and is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health at the University of Melbourne. Vlada works with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds to build solutions that address user needs. Her research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence, health informatics, and digital health, and involve the application of machine learning, natural language processing, and image analysis methods to complex biomedical and clinical documentation datasets. Vlada enjoys the interdisciplinary challenge and loves seeing the development and implementation of tools from start to end.
