Implementation science: the next frontier for early palliative care

Implementation science offers the system-wide approaches necessary to underpin the translation evidence of benefit of early palliative care into practice.

Despite evidence of benefit, there continues to be significant gaps in access to timely palliative care for people with advanced illness. Translation of evidence into practice requires new ways of thinking.  Implementation science offers a systematic approach to addressing the political, cultural, organisational and individual barriers to effective research translation, and represent the new frontier for improving care for people who may benefit from palliative care.

Professor Jennifer Philip is the appointed Chair of Palliative Medicine, University of Melbourne, St Vincent’s Hospital and in collaboration by the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Jennifer is a palliative care clinician, researcher and teacher whose particular areas of interest include improving the ways supportive and palliative care are delivered, ensuring care is underpinned by high quality evidence and that it is delivered by well trained professionals and carers. She leads the Palliative Nexus group.
