"The Master of Public Health provides ample time to understand and apply concepts, network and make lifelong friends. The dynamic nature of the course structure and the wide variety of electives and specialisations to choose from appeal a lot to me."

Sourav Jain

Sourav started the Master of Public Health at the University of Melbourne in 2019, after studying medicine back home in India.

"I was successful in attaining a medicine degree from a medical college in India and was doing the second year of gastroenterology residency when I decided that public health is my actual calling because of the degrading public healthcare sector in India and the need to improve it. Thus, began my search for universities offering reputable public health degrees."

The Master of Public Health at the University of Melbourne proved to the answer to Sourav's search.

"The Master of Public Health provides ample time to understand and apply concepts, network and make lifelong friends. The dynamic nature of the course structure and the wide variety of electives and specialisations to choose from appeal a lot to me. Moreover, the majority of the course is delivered face-to-face which gives opportunity to network with people from different countries and understand their perspective on the problems. I love the diversity we have in our cohort and the fact that there are people from different professional backgrounds. This provides a wide variety of ideas and techniques in solving complex health problems."

The transition from the Indian to Australian education system took some getting used to, however Sourav was supported every step of the way by academic and professional staff at the University of Melbourne.

"Academic support from the professors and tutors despite their commitments and busy schedules are a blessing. Apart from this, Stop 1 comes handy for administrative queries and issues."

Sourav advises future students to:

“Come to university with an open mind and taking time in understanding things in their own time. It is not a race, and everybody will make it through, regardless of their pace. It’s completely okay to ask for help, there will be other students with the same query or issues as you, and working as a team in solving problems is way better than struggling alone.”
