MDHS Graduate Research Trust Scholarships Terms and Conditions
MDHS graduate research trust scholarships are funded from trust funds established through the generosity of alumni, former staff and other benefactors as well as philanthropic foundations.
MDHS graduate research trust scholarships are funded from trust income and as such the purpose of these funds, and the amount of funding available in each round, is determined by the rules of the trust.
Amounts advertised are approximate and the final amount to be awarded will be confirmed at the time of offer.
Funds awarded may be shared among more than one recipient, at the discretion of the Associate Dean Graduate Research (or equivalent).
Recipients of MDHS graduate research trust scholarships must acknowledge the support of the donor or trust on relevant publications and in the thesis, they may be required to provide a progress report, or be asked to attend thank you, award, prize-giving or other ceremonies to acknowledge the trust scholarship. MDHS graduate research Trust scholarships are of three types:
Stipend scholarships - paid at or above the University of Melbourne standard graduate research scholarship stipend rate in fortnightly instalments for up to 2 years for Masters or 3.5 years for PhD candidates (or part-time equivalent). These scholarships include limited paid leave benefits in line with the paid leave available for graduate research scholarships.
Top up scholarships – additional funds provided to candidates who already have stipend support. These scholarships are provided either as a fortnightly amount across a year or as a one-off lump sum payment, dependent on the amount of the award and the timing of the allocation.
Travel scholarships – funds provided for the specific purpose of supporting travel costs related to research. These scholarships are paid as one-off lump sum payments on confirmation of travel expenditure.
Awardees of a Trust scholarship paid at the full stipend rate must notify the MDHS GR team if they are awarded another scholarship to support their research, as holding two scholarships concurrently may not be compliant.
Where a MDHS graduate research trust scholarship is offered for top-up or travel purposes, holders of stipend scholarships are eligible to apply.
MDHS graduate research trust scholarships awarded by automatic consideration are normally awarded to applicants who applied in Round 1 of scholarship applications each year. An MDHS graduate research trust scholarship being paid fortnightly will cease if:
you submit your thesis for examination.
your enrolment is discontinued, terminated, lapsed or you withdraw from your degree.
You fail to meet the conditions of the award
Only graduate researchers enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne are eligible for MDHS graduate research trust scholarships.

Where a MDHS graduate research trust scholarship makes specific provision for travel support, presentations or overseas placement, recipients are required to provide receipts for reimbursement of any expenses for which the scholarship was awarded.
MDHS graduate research trust scholarships paid fortnightly may be held part-time. The payment will be spread over the part-time equivalent of 12 months from the commencement of the scholarship (except for discontinuation, termination, submission of thesis for examination or leave of absence). Some trusts specify the duration of the scholarship must be for one year; for these trusts, payments will only be made over 12 months.
