Orygen PhD scholarship in Young Men’s Mental Health

This PhD project is supported by a scholarship from Movember. The Young Men’s Mental Health collaboration brings together leading researchers in the area to generate new knowledge aiming to improve our understanding of mental health concerns in young men and how to better equip clinicians and services to respond to their needs.

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Dr. Zac Seidler and Dr. Simon Rice.

Eligibility

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic student with a strong interest in the interaction between gender, mental health systems and outcomes. The successful candidate will have the following background and experience:

  • Completed tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a 4-year honours degree at an Australian university with a minimum result of first class Honours in the field of psychology, or related discipline;
  • Strong statistical (SPSS, R or Python) and qualitative interview skills are desirable;
  • Excellent communications skills in English, both written and verbal;
  • Experience in writing (international) publication(s) or conference presentations will be highly regarded but not but not essential.
  • A strong knowledge of, and specific interest in, initiatives supporting men’s mental health
  • It is essential that applicants meet the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science’s requirements for Graduate Research candidature.

Benefits

The base stipend will be equivalent to APA rate, which is currently AUD$ 30,600 per annum (2019 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years (with the possibility to extend for further six months), subject to satisfactory progress.

Selection

Eligible candidates are selected on the basis of academic merit, strength of supporting documentation and references and the terms of the Movember scholarship. Interviews will take place with a selection of applicants for final selection.

Outcomes

  • Applicants will be advised of the outcome by the end of January.
  • The successful applicant will be invited to submit an online University of Melbourne application form.
  • Applicants should note that the offer of a PhD place must be taken on a full-time basis.
