Statement on the de-naming of spaces in MDHS

As Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) at the University of Melbourne, I would like to acknowledge the development of the Faculty as a contemporary and diverse community and reaffirm our commitment to truth-telling and reconciliation.

MDHS values ask of us to be respectful of diverse histories and lived experiences; to engage in growth and be accountable, and to create a safe place to work that fosters belonging and aspiration. As the Faculty marks its 150^th anniversary in 2026, we have deeply considered these values and how they can re-define our future.

The University’s truth-telling scholarship documented in Dhoombak Goobgoowana: A History of Indigenous Australia and the University of Melbourne, and the Faculty’s commitment to our values has resulted in several important planned changes, including the de-naming of spaces within the Faculty.

MDHS has de-named the Medley and Sunderland Theatres and the Ryan Seminar Room, as endorsed by the Governance and Nominations Committee and approved by the University Council. These spaces were historically named in honour of their namesakes’ positive contribution and service to their professions and to the University. The decision to de-name the spaces arises from evidence that determines aspects of their careers are inconsistent with the University’s current day values, namely, significant engagement with and promotion of eugenics and its associated practices, and/or the collection of Indigenous bodies and remains.

The changes reflect regular University review of property, including buildings and teaching/meeting spaces and responds to the University Naming and Memorial Policy, Section 4.1(b) that sets out the requirement that place names should 'align with the objects, values, strategies and policies of the University and community expectations’ (see University Naming and Memorial Policy https://policy.unimelb.edu.au/MPF1201/)'.

The Faculty has approached this decision in the spirit of critical engagement with the past and how the telling of history changes over time. We are committed to ensuring that history is not erased or distorted through name-changing, so the de-naming process will include appropriate measures that support learning and understanding about the changes and why they are necessary. The Faculty will also engage in a process of re-naming the spaces, through consultation and careful consideration and with the intent to move away from naming spaces after people.
