Unviversity of Calgary researchers visit the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

The University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine recently visited the University of Melbourne to meet researchers across the faculty and university partners.

The delegation was led by Dean Dr Todd Anderson and included Vice Dean Professor Beverly Adams, Senior Associate Dean Faculty Affairs Professor Richard Leigh, and renowned microbiome researcher Professor Kathy McCoy.

The faculties have an established relationship on stroke research spanning 30 years, alongside engagement with the Doherty Institute. MDHS and Calgary are also recipients of transformational donations from international philanthropist Mr Geoffrey Cumming.

Kathy McCoy was also the special guest at the Advancing Health 2030 Impact Panel Discussion 'Gut Reaction: Exploring the microbiome's affect on health' held in late April. Kathy spoke about the incredible work her lab is conducting at the International Microbiome Centre to understand the cellular and molecular pathways underlying the impact of the microbiome in health and disease.  Professor Elisa Hill-Yardin and Professor Sammy Bedoui joined Kathy on the Impact Panel. You can watch a recording of the program online.

The delegation met with teams across UoM to further collaboration in other areas of shared research interest including general practice and workforce planning, medical education, indigenous health, clinical trials, cancer, digital health and brain research.

Cumming School of Medicine and MDHS recently announced a joint $100,000 competitive grant program in immunology and infectious diseases, and this recent visit has presented an opportunity for ongoing discussions around potential joint research projects and exchange programs across the two institutions.
