UK Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care visits the Faculty

Mr Wes Streeting MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care of the United Kingdom visited the University of Melbourne on 29 November to engage with medical research organisations in the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct.

A focus of the visit was sharing learnings on mental health. Mr Streeting toured The Florey with Professor Andrew Lawrence, Deputy Director, Head of Addiction Neuroscience Group, to see the institute’s work in neuroscience and mental health research.

He met with Professor Sarah Wilson, co-CEO for the Victorian Collaborative Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing to discuss access to mental health services following the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

They discussed the objectives of the new Centre together with Dr Orli Schwartz of the Advanced Interventions in Mood Disorders Clinic, who spoke about access to novel treatments and therapies for depression. Representatives from the Melbourne-based men's health organisation Movember also joined the discussions on mental health with Mr Streeting.

Mr Streeting also met with Stroke experts Professor Geoffrey Donnan AO and Professor Stephen Davis AO, of the Melbourne Brain Centre to learn about the Medical Research Fund Frontiers’ Stroke Golden Hour project and innovations in stroke rehabilitation.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) and meeting on precision cancer medicine with Professor Sean Grimmond.
