SNAP Trial Findings Published in The Lancet and NEJM
Congratulations to Prof Steven Tong, Prof Joshua Davis (University of Newcastle) and the entire SNAP team for their two outstanding publications in The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Prof Steven Tong leads Adaptive Platform Trials at the Melbourne Centre for Clinical Trials (Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne) and also holds appointments at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity and The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The SNAP trial is a global adaptive platform trial focused on improving outcomes for patients with Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections. Its findings show that flucloxacillin should no longer be the standard treatment. For different subsets of S. aureus, cefazolin should now be preferred for methicillin-susceptible infections, and benzylpenicillin preferred for penicillin-susceptible infections. This will change standard care worldwide.
This is a remarkable achievement with real world impact. Congratulations again to all involved!
