About
Art and science collide in a spectacular universal dance of microscopic imagery at White Night.
The Universe Within features a dance of intriguing images photographed through microscopes in the biomedical research laboratories. The striking colours and mesmerising patterns bring to life the spectacular universe that lurks under the microscope and within our own bodies.

- Making of the projections
The spectacular microscopic images were creatively projected on onto VCA Alumna dancer and contortionist, Amy MacPherson.
- Biomedical Research
Research in biomedical laboratories is where pioneering advances in medical treatments begin. Melbourne is at the forefront of ground-breaking research and is home to the Biomedical Precinct, a world leader in cancer research, neuroscience, medical bionics, genetics and infectious diseases.
- Where ideas collide
The Universe Within is a collision of science and art. When the brightest minds come together we achieve incredible things. Find out more about the contributions that come from a collision of ideas.
All images are drawn from Under the Coverslip, a competition run annually by students from the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in the School of Biomedical Sciences, which showcases the beauty of scientific imagery that the complex microscopic techniques produce, as well as the important research conducted by the students.
Admiration and intrigue inspired by the video give you an opportunity to view scientific research with an approach that is interesting and engaging, and hopefully inspires you to find out more about the ground breaking and exciting biomedical research that takes place within the School of Biomedical Sciences.
We are proud to have participated in White Night 2016 with the The Universe Within projection.
