2021 Symposium
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) Early Career Researcher (ECR) Network is an ECR-led committee that supports early- and mid-career researchers within the Faculty of MDHS. The Network organises a yearly symposium for researchers to expand their network and share their research – this year marks our 7th Symposium, which will be held virtually across two days. These will be on Thursday 18 November and of Friday 19 November.
The Symposium program will include oral presentations from MDHS ECRs, a Town Hall event featuring the MDHS Deanery and a Plenary session featuring four experts who were actively engaged in science communication during the Covid-19 pandemic. Registration is open to all MDHS ECRs and last-year PhD students. There are several cash prizes for best presentations to be won and registration is free.
Town Hall
We will be running a Town Hall session during the symposium. This is an ECR-centred Forum with members of the Faculty Leadership team at an on Thursday, 18th November, 3:30pm – 4:30pm. Joining us will be:
- Prof Jane Gunn, Dean, Faculty of MDHS
- Prof Mike McGuckin, Deputy Dean, Faculty of MDHS
- Prof Alicia Spittle, Associate Dean of Research, Faculty of MDHS
This event will provide a forum for Early and Mid-Career Researchers from the Faculty to voice the major concerns they have surrounding their positions at the University with a particular focus on secure employment, COVID-19 disruptions and mental health. Formal presentations will be brief, and the majority of the session has been set aside for Q&A which will be delivered using the Poll Everywhere platform. Plenary
We will also be running a plenary session with Professor Peter Doherty, Professor Nancy Baxter, Professor Patrick McGorry, Professor Jodie McVernon and Dr Mariam Tokhi. The theme of the session will be ‘Communicating science through COVID-19’ and the format will be a panel Q&A with a chance for attendees to ask questions.
