Opportunity

Digitising the medical attendance statement (MAS) offers clear benefits for clinician and assessor workflows. However, past implementation failures highlight the critical need to thoroughly characterise workflows and user attitudes before adoption, to avoid repeating the mistakes of previous attempts.

Intervention

The Centre’s research team conducted contextual inquiry with clinicians to identify current and past challenges with the MAS, followed by co-design sessions with industry to identify the required elements of a digital solution. Low- and mid-fidelity prototypes were developed and tested with end users — both clinicians and claimants — to assess fit and usability, culminating in a Figma prototype designed to evaluate workflow and key functions.

Impact of simulation

The project clarified key workflow issues that had undermined previous digital MAS implementations and produced a viable prototype that balances ease of use with security requirements.

The work has positioned the project for functional prototype development and testing, with end-user needs embedded throughout the design process.
