The Health Workforce Scholarship Program is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health designed to improve access to health services needed in rural areas.


Awarded scholarships can be up to the value of $10,000 per year. Individuals can apply for a scholarship to support a portion of their postgraduate course fees, even if already receiving a portion from another non-government grant/fund.

All applications will be assessed against the needs of the community. Scholarships and bursaries will be awarded to those who wish to undertake study and training that will help to fill a service gap or address the health needs of specific communities.


The following professions are eligible to apply:

  • General practitioners
  • Nurses / Midwives
  • Allied health professionals
  • Aboriginal Health Workers
  • Currently practising in Australia.
  • Live in or provide services to areas categorised as MMM 3-7 (please visit the DoctorConnect website for more information).
  • Employed by a private organisation, Aboriginal Medical Service or non-government organisation.


Need to check carefully that you fit into the criteria that has been specified. If so please use the application form on the websites below to apply. Need two written references and a commitment to work in the rural area for at least 12 months.
