About

By her Will dated 31 March 2010, the late Jean Jackson BSc (Melb.) PhD (Malaya) (nee Millis) (‘donor’) bequeathed $100,000 to the University (‘bequest’)- ‘… for research in Biotechnology or Environmental Microbiology’. The donor, who died on 29 March 2012 aged 99, was a biochemist specialising in dietetics and nutrition. The donor graduated from the University in 1934 with a bachelor of Science degree, and an exhibition in biochemistry. She was appointed lecturer (and later senior lecturer) in biochemistry at the University in 1935. In 1950 she was appointed senior lecturer in charge of nutrition at the University of Malaya in Singapore. She taught medical, dental and social studies students but much of her time was spent on research into the influence of nutrition on the development of infants, especially those of low socioeconomic status.

Benefits

Approx. $5,000 pa, with up to two awards possible per year.

Eligibility

To be considered for this award, students must: Be a current Research Higher Degree student (Masters, MPhil and PhD) undertaking research in the areas of biotechnology or environmental microbiology.

Selection

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Research Committee will select scholarship recipients using the following criteria:-

  • Alignment with the aims of the Millis Jackson Research Scholarship for "research in Biotechnology or Environmental Microbiology"
  • Benefit to the development of the student
  • Scientific merit of the proposed work or undertaking
