About
Jointly sponsored by The Australian Orthopaedic Association, and the Melbourne Medical School. The scholarship is awarded annually to assist in the cost of a supervised attachment in approved orthopaedic units in Australia or overseas.

Eligibility
The AOA Joint University Scholarship is open to Doctor of Medicine (MD) students of all year levels enrolled in the Clinical Elective subject (MEDS90027), or students undertaking a research project through the MD Research Project subjects MEDS90021 and MEDS90026, or undertaking any other orthopaedic placement/project/activity.
To be eligible students must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident, have good academic standing and have not previously been awarded this scholarship.
Selection
Applications will be assessed by the University of Melbourne with final approval by the AOA Chair of Education and Training.
Applications will be assessed based on their relevance to orthopaedic and trauma surgery, appropriateness of need as outlined in the costs list, and the student’s academic merit.
Application
Eligible students must submit an application consisting of:
- Evidence of elective placement in the area of orthopaedics / trauma surgery or approved MD Research Project in the discipline, or other orthopaedic activity outside these subjects
- A brief outline of projected costs associated with the placement, for which the scholarship would be used.
- A half-page statement outlining the applicant’s interest in orthopaedics and how they will benefit from the scholarship.

* Students may apply prior to their MD Research Project being formally approved. Evidence of an appropriate approved topic and / or placement is required before students are eligible for the scholarship payment.
Outcome
Students will be advised via their university email address whether they were successful.

More information
Awardees will be required to submit a report following their placement (1500 - 5000 words). These reports will be assessed by the University of Melbourne and subsequently approved by the AOA Chair of Education and Training (or nominee).
