Scholarship eligibility
Domestic Applicants
You are considered a domestic graduate research applicant because you have:
- Australian or New Zealand citizenship, Australian permanent residency or hold an Australian permanent humanitarian visa; And you have:
- Applied for (or you are already enrolled in) a graduate research degree in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne.
Stipend Scholarships
A stipend is a scholarship that is provided to support you with your living expenses. The majority of scholarships are for full-time enrolment but there are some available for part-time enrolment.
All domestic applicants should apply for these schemes:
- Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships (formerly Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)
- Melbourne Research Scholarships
- MDHS Graduate Research Trust Scholarships
Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for the wide variety of other scholarship schemes available from government, non-government and charitable institutions.
Course fees
If you are offered entry to a graduate research degree, you will automatically be exempt from course fees as you will be offered an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships (formerly Research Training Scheme - RTS).
The Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship provides Commonwealth-funded graduate research students with an entitlement to an exemption from student contribution fees for the duration of an accredited graduate research course, up to a maximum period of four years full-time equivalent study for a doctorate by research, and two years full-time equivalent study for a master’s by research. The University may elect to impose fees on students who wish to remain enrolled after exhausting their entitlement.
International Applicants
You are considered an international graduate research applicant because you:
- Are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, nor are you an Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent Humanitarian Visa; And you have:
- Applied for (or you are already enrolled in) a graduate research degree in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne.

Course fees
The great majority of international graduate researchers do not pay course fees in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Faculty typically offers ~100 course fee waivers annually via Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS) or the Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships. The remaining applicants are sponsored by their home government or other institution or government.
All international applicants without sponsorship should apply for:
- Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships (formerly IPRS)
- Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS)
All International applicants who advise the University on their application form that they are applying for both course and scholarship will be considered for MIFRS (noting that this is not a guarantee of offer). Please contact Research Support & Evaluation if you would like further advice.
Sponsorship
Applicants with sponsorship must include information with their application giving details of sponsorship arrangements so that the Faculty can assess whether additional support may be required.
