Open Day is your chance to explore life as a University of Melbourne student. Come join us at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences to learn more about studying with us! Meet the academics who are teaching into our courses and chat with current students about their experience at Melbourne. With various information sessions taking place, this is the perfect opportunity to explore our courses and your study options. Visit us at our marquee, the Medical Building and at the Kenneth Myer Building.

  • Virtual Reality Experience

    Time: All day
    Venue: Medical Building, Level 3 North Wing (map)

    Experience Virtual Reality first-hand in the largest room scale Virtual Reality teaching space in Australia . The Virtual Reality Learning Studio immerses you in the operating theatre, dissection lab and even the human body. These are used in our physiology practical classes.

    We will also open up our laboratories to visitors showing them the spaces that undergraduate Biomedical Sciences students learn in. In these labs there will be some hands on experiments that can be interacted with.

  • Be a Dentist for a day
    • Ever tried drilling a tooth? 
      Time: 10am–3:00pm (every 15 minutes)

      Be a dentist for a day – come try out our Moog Simodont Dental Trainer simulations! Experience our state of the art technology facilities (first in Australia) offered to our students at Melbourne Dental School.

    • Oral Health and Dentistry teaching facility tours
      Time: 10.15pm – 3.15pm
      Venue: Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, Ground Floor (720 Swanston St)

      Join a tour of the student facilities located at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne which offers Oral Health and Dental students both the private and public patient experience.
  • Explore health sciences

    Time: All day
    Venue: Marquee

    • Clinical Audiology: Ear Check  
      Come find out how your ears contribute to everyday life in surprising ways you may not be aware of.
    • Nursing: Health check
      Get a blood pressure reading, and learn how a blood pressure reading can indicate the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.
    • Optometry: Visual Test
      Check out your visual acuity to find out if you are near or long-sighted.
    • Physiotherapy: Grip-strength test 
      How strong are you? Come try out our grip-strength test to get an indication of overall strength and other health issues.
    • Speech Pathology: Supported Communication activity
      Explore the different techniques to communicate when you can’t rely on speech such as communication yes or no cards, etc.
  • Rural Health engagement centre

    Time: All day

    If you are from a regional area or have an interest in a career in rural health, drop by the MDHS and Department of Rural Health engagement centre!

    Here you’ll be able to chat with staff and current Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health students to find more about the exciting programs and support we offer to all students and the special entry schemes for those with a regional background.

  • Lab and Museum tours
    • Research Lab tour
      Time: 12.30pm (40 mins)

      This Laboratory Tour allows visitors to see the “engine room” of research at The University of Melbourne. Visitors will be able to see examples of the advanced imaging and recording technologies employed in these state of the art neuroscience laboratories.
    • Brownless Biomedical Library and student-led tours

      Check out the facilities and learning spaces available to our students.
    • Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology 
      Museum is open all day (10am–4pm)
      Venue: Medical Building, Level 3 (map)

      Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology is one of Australia's largest collections of real human tissue specimens and historical anatomical models, offering students and researchers a unique insight into the human body.
    • Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum
      Museum is open all day (10am–4pm)
      Curator tour: 11:30am (30 minutes)
      Venue: Ground Floor, Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne (720 Swanston St) (map)

      The Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum is the most significant and oldest dental collection in Australia, tracing its origins back to the Odontological Society of Victoria established in 1884. The museum collects, exhibits and promotes the history of dentistry and dental education. Themes include Early Dentistry, World War 1, Outreach and Innovation.
    • Medical History Museum
      Museum is open all day (10am–4pm)
      Curator tour: 1:00pm (20 minutes) and 3:00pm (20 minutes)
      Venue: Second floor, Brownless Biomedical Library (map)

      Explore one of the oldest and finest collections of medical education history in the Australia. The exhibition showing is The art of healing: Australian Indigenous bush medicine.
  • Sausage Sizzle for a cause

    Time: All day (until sold out)
    Venue: Nearby the entrance of Brownless Biomedical Library (map)

    Feeling hungry? Grab a snack at the Outlook Rural Health Club’s sausage sizzle!
    All proceeds will go to Purple House, Alice Springs.
