Melbourne Medical School

Department of General Practice and Primary Care

The Department of General Practice and Primary Care is committed to enhancing general practice and primary health care through excellent education that engages with the community and the wider health care system.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) students at the University of Melbourne undertake general practice and primary care placements throughout the course. All students have a previous undergraduate degree, usually (but not always) from a biomedical, science or allied health field.

Each year we work with over 250 practices across the state who host our students. We offer a range of GP placement opportunities to our students, varying from one-day per week in MD1 to a 6-week, block placement in MD3. Students are strongly encouraged to experience placements in both rural and metro settings. For more information about our current placement offerings please refer to our department website

All GP supervisors are expected to undertake training. Currently, all the training is online, and access is given once your practice has been allocated a student. Clinical supervision skills and educational standards are covered in the training, as well as general information on the GP component of the Doctor of Medicine course.

We are always keen to hearing from interested practices so please contact us for further information at: gp-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au and one of Teaching & Learning team will be touch to discuss your interest and next steps.
