The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research is affiliated with The University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Hospital and offers undergraduate (honours) and graduate research training opportunities through the Faculty's Department of Medical Biology. Research is undertaken in the thematic areas of cancer, chronic inflammatory diseases and infectious diseases in laboratories based in Parkville and Bundoora.

Professor Ken Smith holds positions as the Head of Department of the Department of Medical Biology and Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. He commenced in his role as Director at WEHI in April 2024 after returning to Australia from the UK, where he had been Head of the Department of Medicine at Cambridge University since 2010.
