In Conversation with Professor Patrick McGorry AO (Executive Director, Orygen, the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health) and Professor Matthew Broome (Director, Institute for Mental Health, University of Birmingham, UK)
Significant gains have been made over the past decade to improve the way we respond to the mental health needs of our young people. The critical foundation of youth mental health care, focused to early intervention has been laid which has improved young people’s access to primary mental health care – for example through the establishment of over 100 headspace centres across Australia and the development of the Youthspace model in Birmingham, UK.
However, challenges persist. There remains serious underinvestment in direct mental health care when compared to the enormous social and economic burden of mental ill-health and large gaps in mental health services persist (or have become wider) particularly for young people with moderate or serious mental health conditions.
You are invited to join Professor Patrick McGorry AO and Professor Matthew Broome from the University of Birmingham to unpack the challenges and discuss the opportunities needed to ‘bridge the gap.’
