The power of the Ngangkaṟi
On Monday 9 July Maringka Burton, Betty Muffler, and Tinpulya Mervyn – Ngangkaṟi (healers) from the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women's Council in Alice Springs – delivered a joint Dean’s Lecture with Professor Marcia Langton AM.
It was a truly special and informative lecture where the speakers shared insights and answered audience questions about traditional healing practice. As Maringka said towards the end of the lecture: ‘It is really enjoyable to be able to share our experiences of being Ngangkaṟis … we’d like to share our story and it has made us very happy to be here tonight’ (translated by Patrick Hookey).

The lecture ran alongside other events celebrating the invaluable contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women across the University as part of NAIDOC Week 2018, the theme of which was ‘Because of her, we can!’
