Third Building Healthy Communities Report Launched at Derrimut Primary School

On 24 November 2017, the latest Building Healthy Communities in Melbourne's West Project Report was launched at Derrimut Primary School.

The launch took place during the official opening of a sensory garden that was constructed with support from the project.

The garden was opened by North Western Melbourne PHN CEO Christopher Carter, with speeches from Derrimut Primary School Principal, Joanna Stanford, and Senior Director Engagement, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Janice Thomas.

'Our sensory garden is a much-needed outdoor learning space for our school,' Joanna said. 'It has been our dream for the last five years to build something like this that teaches our kids to sensory regulate in nature.'

Now in its third wave, the project has worked with three primary schools and engaged with thousands of people in Melbourne's west.

The University of Melbourne worked in partnership with Brimbank City Council, North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, Victoria Police, and Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia to deliver the project, which involved community building, health promotion and screenings, and an investment in health supportive infrastructure.

Since the project began in 2011, over 2,000 people have been screened.

This year, 53 students from the University's Western Clinical School, Melbourne Dental School, and Department of Optometry were involved in the project.

'We've created an opportunity for our students to come into a school and really get to know the community and talk about how important the health message is,' Janice said.
