Michael Wei

Michael is a second year Doctor of Medicine student and recipient of an MDHS Scholarship (Medicine).

The opportunity to undertake my study at the University of Melbourne meant I had to relocate and move out of my family home in Brisbane. I have found living in a new city and embracing university life without the support of family close by to be a challenging yet rewarding experience. This scholarship has eased my stress over living expenses like rent, helped me cover the cost of medical equipment and study materials, and afforded me the privilege of being able to fully immerse myself in medicine.

During my studies at Melbourne, I’ve developed an interest in research and have since been involved in biomedical research across various institutes such as the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Bio21 Institute, and the Centre of Eye Research Australia.

Outside of medicine, I have an interest in management consulting and social entrepreneurship. In the second year of my undergraduate degree, I founded a not-for-profit organisation that aimed to improve cancer education at the secondary school level. It was here that I discovered the satisfaction of being able to create change, which played a major part in why I wanted to pursue a career in medicine.

This year I have had the chance to undertake clinical placements, and have been enjoying medicine more than ever before. I have found myself highly motivated by the opportunities to learn in the hospital environment.

My educational pursuits would not be possible without the generosity of the Melbourne Medical School scholarship donors. I would like to sincerely thank you all for your support
