Message from the Dean, 22 April 2020
In this latest video message the Dean covers:
- Current COVID-19 statistics for Australia, with the number of new cases remaining low and the curve flattening
- As ANZAC Day approaches, I revisit our Faculty’s response to the First World War and examine some of the parallels of sacrifice and innovation between times of war and the COVID-19 response
- The magnificent work of one of our third-year MD students, Daniel Lamanna, who is assisting front-line health workers by coordinating household and child-minding help from a laptop in his bedroom
- The Shepparton Medical Centre continues to serve its community by adapting to challenges with care and courage
- The first of the six-part Life Beyond Coronavirus series, where I interview eminent thinkers discussing COVID-19 and what may lie beyond for health, science, the economy and society
- An example of the importance of rigour and scholarship in science was highlighted recently when a Stanford paper claiming there could be 50-80 times more asymptomatic than symptomatic cases of COVID-19, was quickly rebuked by others who identified statistical errors and false positive and sample recruitment issues
