Message from the Dean, 10 August 2020

Usually Professor Shitij Kapur uses this video to bring you news about COVID, and how we are managing teaching and research. But in this video he addresses last week's announcement by the Vice-Chancellor and our subsequent Faculty townhall on how MDHS is responding.

The scale of the challenge before us is now clear, and you will find details of the University's finances on the dedicated webpage. We are now carefully looking at ways of reducing non-salary expenditure across the whole Faculty so that we will be in a better position to save jobs. But some job losses will be unavoidable, and right at this moment I realise the uncertainty is difficult.

Throughout this period we will be guided by our Faculty values and keep our commitments to Indigenous Development, Diversity and Inclusion and early and mid-career researchers.

We are fortunate to have dedicated colleagues in our Heads of Schools, Associate Deans and Directors. I am grateful for their collegiality and willingness to work as one to find the best way forward.

Starting from today your School Heads and Faculty Directors will be meeting and consulting with you and I will be working with fellow Deans and colleagues in Chancellery to get the best outcome for our Faculty in the context of the University Plan.

Throughout this period I encourage your involvement, we will need your help and ideas. Shortly, we will set up a Faculty FAQs page and a dedicated inbox to facilitate this.

Thank you for watching.
