New one-stop cancer resource for Victorian patients and clinicians

A new resource will help the 95 Victorians who are diagnosed with cancer each day access vital information, resources and services.

WeCan.org.au is designed to ensure that every Victorian with cancer has equal access to information and support to help manage the day to day challenges of living with and beyond the disease.

Launching online on 6 May, it also provides health care professionals with an efficient and valuable resource that they can use with patients from diagnosis, during and after treatment.

The Department of Health and Human Services has invested funds into the project to strengthen Victoria’s capability to deliver critical Supportive Care for those affected by and caring for people with cancer.

As well as needing information about cancer, patients, their families and carers have many and varied support needs including financial services, childcare, transport, accommodation, and emotional support.

WeCan.org.au is based on a comprehensive research and engagement process with regional and metropolitan cancer patients and clinicians, and some of Victoria’s most trusted cancer support and advocacy organisations.

This will ensure that Victorians have a resource that can take them to the largest range of established cancer support services in one location.

University of Melbourne Chair in Cancer Nursing and project lead Mei Krishnasamy said the resource is timely and needed.

“Victoria has a rich and impressive collection of cancer support organisations and services,” Professor Krishnasamy said.

“Our vision has been to make sure that all Victorians have equal chance to find them, and make it accessible to anyone, anytime, anywhere.”

Cancer survivor Meg urges anyone recently diagnosed with cancer to access the WeCan.org.au website and seek the support that they need.

“There is help and support out there. If it’s not offered, if no one asks what it is you need, look for it. Search for WeCan and it will be there,” she said.
