Developing recommendations for national human genomics infrastructure

Ongoing work to define key implementation elements for national human genomics infrastructure for Australia

PROFESSOR OLIVER HOFMANN
Head of Bioinformatics
University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research

Despite a $20 billion investment in health and medical research through the Medical Research Future Fund Australia still does not have the genomic data management infrastructure to keep up with current and planned human sequencing activities.

Oliver outlines some of our existing efforts to bridge this gap in collaboration with Australian Genomics, Australian BioCommons and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, how this work relates to National Approach to Genomics Information Management (NAGIM) Blueprint, and how you can help shape the process.

Professor Oliver Hofmann is the Head of Bioinformatics at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research and a Professor in the Department of Clinical Pathology. His team builds platforms and workflows for rapid whole genome analysis of cancer patients. He has previously worked in Scotland on the National Genome Partnership program and developed a bioinformatics core for the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He co-leads the AGHA Data Management Program [with Prof Amanda Spurdle and Prof Daniel MacArthur] and the GA4GH Large Scale Genomics work stream [with Dr Geraldine Van der Auwera].
