We’re confident that our new Plan measures up to the challenges and opportunities of the next five years, and most importantly, it reflects the collective will and ambition of our large and diverse Faculty. I would like to thank the hundreds of students and staff who have given time and thought to help us shape what our future should look like. We’re confident that this Plan will help us develop the knowledge and people who will change the world of health and healthcare, and as a result, cement our position as Australia’s leading health and biomedical faculty.

At the heart of our Plan is my commitment to invest in developing the careers and wellbeing of our people, and fostering a culture that supports all of us to do our best work. Critical to our success will be the creation of an environment that is respectful, open to new ideas, and values diversity as a strength.

There will be new opportunities in learning and teaching – with a special emphasis on preparing students for the changing world of healthcare, while at the same time valuing their teachers who will help them achieve their ambitions.

Our Faculty leads Australia in Health Research. Beyond 2018 lays out how we will maintain this leadership and capitalise on the changes in the NHMRC and the opportunities that the new Medical Research Future Fund provides. In doing so we will open up new areas of excellence. It is our ambition, along with our healthcare partners and our State, to become one of the leaders in the use of data and informatics for improving health.

Beyond 2018 recognises that we will not do this alone – we will do it with our partner faculties in the University, we will do this in partnership with hospitals and medical research institutes, and with our local communities. Internationally, we will deepen our partnerships to make the most of our position in one of the fastest growing regions of the world and enhance our standing as the leading university for health and medicine in the Asia-Pacific region.

A meaningful strategic plan is about creating purposeful change. Our task now is to convert these words to action. In the coming months, we will release the 2018 Action Plan, timed with the finalisation of the Faculty’s budget – and will do this every year to keep the plan alive‚Ä®and relevant. The Action Plan will detail what progress you can expect, and how you can continue to be involved. At the end of each year, I will report back to the Faculty on our progress, and where we might need to consider new issues of differing courses of action.

I would like to thank all those who have taken part in the planning process. From the outset, we wanted to listen to the full range of voices across this faculty – students, academic and professional staff – and those of our partners. I’m particularly thankful to our School Heads, Associate Deans and Stream Leaders for making this happen.
