Message from Dr Ruth Park-Jones, Business Development Director and Cluster Lead for MDHS

What a truly testing start to the year we have had. The success stories and highlights captured in this newsletter are testament to the hard work and perseverance of the researchers and their support teams as we strive together to translate research outcomes despite this very difficult environment.

In recognition of the significant challenges that we are all facing, the MDHS Business Development team continues to work closely with our academic colleagues to provide support and guidance as they navigate the impact of COVID-19 on research programs, funding opportunities and industry collaborations. We are committed to assisting the academic community and ask that you please make contact with your Business Development team member or myself (rapark@unimelb.edu.au) should you need any advice or have any concerns.

Dr. Ruth Park Jones

And then there have been the amazing discoveries and medical advances that have been made in response to this very situation. Researchers from across the University of Melbourne, but particularly MDHS, have focused their efforts and drawn on years of expertise to advance new technologies, including new therapeutic options, testing methods and medical equipment, to have an immediate and profound impact on healthcare approaches to COVID-19. Our researchers have become trusted advisors to government agencies as they seek to understand the virus and implement appropriate plans and policies.

It is a unique time to be involved in academic research with the rapid translation of significant COVID-19 related breakthroughs tempered by the challenges and funding constraints facing research programs in other fields.

While we should all celebrate the hard-earned translational wins, some of which are captured in this newsletter, we recognise that 2020 will certainly be a year like no other and the MDHS Business Development team remains committed to working through this with our academic colleagues.
