About
This Award celebrates Indigenous scholarship and the next generation of Indigenous health researchers. Generously supported by the Duncan Leary Bequest, the Award has been established as part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences 150th Anniversary year to honour collaborative networks that advance Indigenous health research and leadership and recognise the role of Indigenous PhD scholars in that endeavour.
The Melbourne Poche Centre for Indigenous Health exemplifies partnership in action. Positioned within MDHS, the Centre is one of five Poche Centres based in universities across Australia, all of which have been founded through the generosity of Mr Greg Poche AO and the late Ms Kay Van Norton Poche AO. Launched in 2015, the Centre’s aim is to build local, national and international networks to support Indigenous health leadership, and to establish ‘a rightful place’ in the academy for Indigenous scholarship through academic pathways for PhD and postdoctoral achievement and research impact.
Central to the Centre’s strategy is to nurture Indigenous relationships and partnerships, and privilege Indigenous principles of engagement and research practices. Bringing together Indigenous PhD scholars from across faculty schools, the Centre works to enhance their PhD experience, increase their exposure to Indigenous scholarship and excellence and support strategic collaborations with community and the global Indigenous research network.
This Award celebrates the outcomes of these partnerships by supporting Indigenous PhD scholars during the critical transition from thesis submission to conferral—providing them an opportunity to publish their work and expanding their reach as emerging Indigenous health research leaders.
This Award is offered to Indigenous graduate researchers in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science on the submission of their PhD thesis.
Benefits
This Award provides a living allowance of up to $28,000 paid in fortnightly payments over a period of 6 months.
There is no leave provision attached to this award.
Note: These payments are taxable income and must be declared in your Tax Return.
Eligibilty
To be eligible for this award, you must:
- Be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by descent, identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and be accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived.
- Have been enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
- Have submitted your thesis for examination.
Application
You must submit an application and include a statement with your intention to publish and/or attend conference/s.
You may apply from the date you submit your PhD thesis up to one month after submission.
