Nicola is Lecturer in Publishing and Editing in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne.

Nicola nonfiction book Unlike the Heart: a memoir of brain and mind (University of Queensland Press, 2019) uses memoir to explore the emerging intersections of neuroscience and psychoanalysis. Her journalism, essays, short fiction and poetry appear in places including The Monthly, The Age, The Australian, The Guardian, Meanjin, the Big Issue, Best Australian Stories and Cordite Poetry Review. She worked as a book editor for a wide range of Australian publishers for more than two decades. Her PhD in Creative Writing (RMIT), currently under examination, brings psychoanalytic clinical techniques for thinking and observing to creative writing practice.
