Jointly sponsored by The Australian Orthopaedic Association, and the Melbourne Medical School. The scholarship is awarded annually to assist in the cost of a supervised attachment in approved orthopaedic units in Australia or overseas.


The value of prize is $4,000

Scholarship is open to Doctor of Medicine (MD) students of all year levels if enrolled in the Clinical Elective subject (MEDS90027), and to MD3 and MD4 students enrolled in the MD Research Project subjects (MEDS90021 and MEDS90026). Students must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident, have good academic standing and have not previously been awarded the scholarship.


Eligible students must submit an application consisting of:

  • Evidence of elective placement in the area of orthopaedics / trauma surgery or approved MD Research Project in the discipline.
  • A brief outline of projected costs associated with the placement, for which the scholarship would be used.
  • A half-page statement outlining the applicant’s interest in orthopaedics and how they will benefit from the scholarship.


Students will be advised via their university email address if they were successful or not.

Awardees will be required to submit a report following their placement (1500 - 5000 words). These reports will be assessed by the University of Melbourne and subsequently approved by the AOA Chair of Education and Training (or nominee).
