Project Details

Early engagement with palliative care services has been shown to improve the outcomes of people with advanced cancer and their families. Our group is involved in a series of multisite phase II clinical research trials testing the impact of introducing palliative care at key transitions in the illness course for people with a series of cancers including:  lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and high grade glioma.

The development of a prognostic formulation and the communication of this to patients and families is central to decisions made around treatment and treatment intensity.  An understanding of prognosis is the basis for setting and achieving goals for the end of life. It has been established that patients who have a clear understanding of their illness and its likely course have greater satisfaction with care, are more likely to die at home and their surviving family members have better bereavement outcomes. Furthermore, patients who have clear illness understanding have less intensification of treatment at the end of life, and incur fewer health costs.  Therefore there are benefits available to the patient, the family and the system more broadly when clear information is provided.

However the manner and most effective means of conveying prognostic information is not well understood. This study will interrogate existing datasets to explore the different means by which prognosis is discussed, the impact and outcomes.  These data can be supplemented as part of a future project to more fully understand the impact of prognosis sharing in advanced illness.

This project is suitable as a Masters or as basis for a PhD.
