Mortality by Commonwealth Electoral Divisions in Australia
A technical paper describing variations in mortality between different Commonwealth Electorates and associated voting patterns has been published today. The purpose of this paper was to describe variations in mortality across Federal Electorates based on the 2013 boundaries. Like most countries, Australia displays significant geographic variation in mortality which is strongly correlated with levels of socio-economic disadvantage.
This research stems from a collaboration between researchers at the Centre for Health Policy at the University of Melbourne and the Public Health Information Development Unit at Torrens University Australia. A geographic atlas showing the mortality data by electorate is also now available.
The study provides evidence of the need to develop policies to tackle health inequalities in the Australian community. It provides a case for future Australian Governments to develop a broader closing the gap strategy for reducing health inequalities in entire Australian Community.
